Investigation in Safety Management Systems

Course Description

The Investigation in Safety Management Systems (ISMS) course is a follow-on course to the Safety Management Systems (SMS) course. It provides managers with knowledge and training in the process of investigating minor accidents and incidents in an aviation organization.  It supports the implementation of an SMS by providing the tools and techniques used to investigate incidents, minor occurrences and hazards. The course provides practical training in investigating an incident through case studies as well as practice writing an investigation report based on the ICAO model. The ISMS course also discusses the aviation manager’s responsibility for supporting an ICAO/NTSB aircraft accident investigation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ISMS course is NOT a course in aircraft accident investigation nor a course in investigation management.  For these two subjects, please refer to the Aircraft Accident Investigation (AAI)  and Investigation Management (IM) courses in the SCSI catalog.

Who Should Attend
  • This course is designed for managers of aviation organizations who have responsibility for reacting to incidents and other occurrences involving safety hazards in their organizations as a part of a comprehensive Safety Management System.

  • This course is not intended for those who will participate in ICAO or NTSB formal aircraft accident investigations, these individuals should take the SCSI Aircraft Accident Investigation Course.

How You Will Benefit

  • The ISMS course expands upon the brief introduction to investigation presented in the Safety Management Systems (SMS) course. In this course you will expand your knowledge of the process of investigation.  You will learn the Integrated Safety Investigation Methodology suggested by ICAO as a process for investigation.  This methodology will show you how to set up an investigation, the steps in collecting and preserving evidence, how to interview witnesses and how to prepare an effective report.  You will also be introduced to the obligations each aviation organization has in supporting a major aircraft accident investigation as defined in the ICAO Annex 13.

  • You will learn a data-driven approach to enhancing aviation safety -- how to collect and use data that will support a proactive approach to safety.

  • This course is accepted by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals for Continuance of Certification credit.

  • SMS is one of the required courses for the Certificate in Safety Management Systems (Aviation) granted by SCSI.

  • SCSI will award 3.6 CEUs to each participant who successfully completes this course.
